“I’m not one of those girls that just go around sleeping with any guy, with no care to anyone’s feelings. I have three rules: never sleep with someone that a friend has feelings for, never sleep with someone who is in a known relationship (when this isn’t disclosed to me, it is not my fault), and finally, never sleep with someone more than three times.”
Emerson Moore is by far one of my favorite heroines. She is confident, sexy and comfortable in her own skin. She has no issues with anyone…except herself. With her “rules” in place, Em has closed off the one part of herself that is vulnerable, her heart. Does she sleep around? Yes. Does she have a reputation because of it? Of course. Does she really care? Nope…until the morning she met “motorcycle boy” as she was coming out of the frat house. He changes something and Em fights it with everything she is; but is it enough?
“Your voice is a little like cocaine. You could bottle that stuff up and sell it. You could make a killing…Can I pay you just to talk to me all day?”
Sexy Jaxon Riley…um, yeah. Hot body, dark hair, piercing blue eyes, voice like velvet caressing your skin when he speaks…oh, he plays football AND rides a motorcycle. *faints* Transferring to school for his junior year, reunited with his twin brother, Jace (YES! he has a twin), and best friend, Cole; Jax is the male counterpart to Em. No attachments, no responsibilities, no clue his world is about to be rocked by the sexy D-cups limping out of the frat house doing the walk of shame with so much confidence, he can’t move. This is going to be fun…she and her sister, Quinn, live next door!
So, when does a casual friendship turn into something more? After classes together, long conversations, study dates, frat parties, movie nights and football games, they somehow become closer than Emerson has ever thought possible; Jaxon is her best friend. Can they still be friends if she breaks her rules? Em doesn’t do relationships, but Jax is different and she’s terrified.
“It’s not so easy when you care about them is it?” Quinn squeezed my hand back. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said avoiding her eyes. “Whatever, your heart knows what I’m talking about, and one day your brain will catch up.”
Relationships between two damaged people can be tricky, and at times, downright impossible. The emotion between Jaxon and Emerson was uncanny. With her past constantly reminding her that relationships fail her, my heart broke. Being young and so hardened to the possibilities of a great love is a tough pill to swallow. Jaxon has to be strong enough and patient enough with her if they ever stand a chance.
“This is exactly why I never wanted to go down this road in the first place, why I made rules…” “You’re driving me f**king insane. The only reason I can stand coming to every single one of these parties is because some crazy-ass masochistic side of me needs to know when you come out of those bedrooms that you’re still okay. But every time I watch you walk up those stairs with some new douche bag, I beg Cole to stop me from going up there, pounding that guy into the ground and throwing you over my shoulder because I know you would be pissed at me…Emerson, tell me what you want…tell me that you want me,” he whispered. “I want you.” Always. “Only me?” “Only you.” Has there ever been anyone else?”
Without meaning to, Em falls in love…and it destroys her. My heart stopped, but I couldn’t stop reading. I had to know if it all worked out in the end. Emerson finally breaks her rules; and Jaxon…
“It’s impossible. I can’t be your friend. It hurts too much. If I’m ruining you, then you’ve destroyed me. I finally trusted someone enough to love and you proved that all along it wasn’t worth it.”
This book wrecked me in such a good way. Emerson and Jaxon’s story is one I will forever remember and read over and over again…
“You’re my heart. You don’t walk away from your heart.”
That’s where I’ve placed them, my heart.
